Triratna

Living ethically and compassionately

The Triratna Buddhist Order and Community (originally known as the WBO and FWBO) was founded by Urygen Sanghrakshita in 1967 and 1968 respectively. An Englishman, he had travelled around India in the 1940’s pursuing his intense interest in Buddhism. After being ordained as a Buddhist monk and given the name Sangharakshita, he met, lived with and studied under the leading teachers of the major Buddhist traditions. On returning to London in the 1960’s he founded the Western Buddhist Order, a radically new Buddhist Order of men and women that was neither exclusively monastic or lay, but embraced both lifestyles and took into account our Western culture and conditioning.

Today this movement has Buddhist centres all over the world, with the Order itself comprising over 2,500 ordained men and women, and the wider community of practitioners numbering many thousand more.

At the core of this form of Buddhism, as embodied in Triratna, are meditation, living ethically and compassionately, developing a clearer understanding of our human condition, life and forming spiritual friendships.
